Super Rafa reclaims Wimbledon Wimbledon July 4 (IBNS) The Spanish world number one Rafael Nadal blows away Tomas Berdych (Czech) 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the final of Wimbledon to reclaim the Wimbledon Men’s single title.
Nadal was in exceptionally good form in the final and hardly faced much difficulties as he won his second championship at the All England Club. Nadal reached the spectacular figure of eight Grand Slams with this title and levelled with the giants of the game like Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Fred Perry and Ken Rosewall.
Previously Nadal had defeated Murray in the semi-finals to reach the final of this mega tennis event.
On the other hand, Rafa’s opposition Tomas Berdych, the Czech 12th seed had shockingly defeated Federer in the Quarter Finals and then third seed Novak Djokovic in straight sets, to make his first ever Grand Slam final appearance.
But in the finals he was unable to produce similar magical performance and was defeated in two hours and 13 minutes.
Earlier, in 2008 Nadal had won the Wimbledon title by defeating Roger Federer in an epic five-set battle.
He could not defend his title in 2009 due to the chronic knee problems that he is still not completely cured of.
But Sunday’s victory was much straight forward than the one against Federer two years back at the same venue.
Nadal had previously won The French Open title this year.
The Spaniard walked away with one million pounds (1.5 million dollars, 1.2 million euros), while Berdych collected 500,000 pounds. |
