Fugitive Czech billionaire Radovan Krejcir cannot be arrested, extradited or deported from South Africa ahead of the final resolution of his application for political asylum.
According to Independnet Online, the guarantee of respite follows the granting of an urgent interdict brought by Krejcir in the Johannesburg High Court on Friday.
The interdict - which was not opposed by either agency - prohibits both the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and the South African Police Force from arresting or detaining Krejcir until his asylum application has been concluded.
The asylum application comes up for consideration in November, but the interdict also specifies that Krejcir should be protected until any appeals he might lodge are resolved - a process that could take several years.
The interdict could also affect a pending review of an earlier court decision to refuse an application for Krejcir's extradition by the Czech Republic. The decision has been placed on review on application by the National Prosecuting Authority, and is scheduled for August 30.
Krejcir entered South Africa in 2007, fleeing from the Seychelles - where for some years he had stayed under the patronage of the Seychellois elite after an earlier flight ahead of threatened arrest from his native Czech Republic.
Krejcir came to public prominence in South Africa after being named in connection with the sensational murder in May this year of sleaze boss Lolly Jackson - and specifically in connection with Jackson's alleged killer, George Louka, aka Smith.
More recently, Krejcir's name has featured prominently in a collection of affidavits in the possession of the Hawks. In some of the affidavits, suggestions are made of a possibly corrupt relationship between Krejcir and Major-General Joey Mabasa, head of the police's Crime Intelligence Gathering Unit in Gauteng.
